Thanksgiving Day through Christmas Day

Anderson Lights of Hope

Sometimes it seems that everyone is asking you for money; people on the phone, people knocking on your door, your friends, your kids, and agencies that you have helped in the past.  The problem is, times are hard and you don’t have any enough money to pay your bills, much less make a donation.  But there is something you can do to alleviate all that guilt and at the same time help all of these people out.  Volunteer!

Volunteering can be done in a number of ways.  You can offer to make phone calls, organize items for events, and help organize the actual event, or work at the event.  Although money is always a necessary part of any non profit agency’s agenda, it is certainly not the only need.  Without Volunteers, who would give out the items in the Soup Kitchen, cook the food at a benefit and serve it, or decorate and operate the various charity dinners and bake sales?  Volunteers are necessary to provide free labor and answer questions regarding the charity and what proceeds are needed for.

If you are tired of saying no because you are short on funds, start volunteering your time and reap the great rewards of knowing you have done your part to help others in need.  It is important to choose a cause that has meaning to you, that way your heart will be in your work.  You don’t even have to commit to a certain number of hours; just let the agency know when you are available and what you are capable of helping with.  Then you can feel good about helping others in need without breaking the bank.
